The Hot Air Balloon Festival

Every year a crowd of thousands comes out to spend the weekend watching a spectacular show of hot air balloons in Plano, Texas.

Thousands of people are out all weekend in the hot Texas sun...

During the festival this past year, the Women's Dermatologic Society sponsored a service project called:

"Families Play Safe in the Sun"

And volunteers from our UTSW Dermatology Interest Group assisted local dermatologists in distributing several thousand packages of sunblock and enabling several hundred people to have the benefit of free skin cancer screenings.

It was a great way to learn and practice clinic skills, get to know some local dermatologists, and fight skin cancer!

This year we:

* Gave out approximately 15,000 packages of sunscreen

* Screened over 400 people, and

* Diagnosed: 39 Basal Cell Carcinomas, 2 Squamous Cell Carcinomas, and 13 Melanomas

A huge thanks to all our volunteers and to the Women's Dermatologic Society for the privilege of serving with them.
